“You Got Manga In My Math Book!” “You Got Math Book In My Manga!”

manga-math.jpg

Word from ComiPress is that there’s a new math textbook in Japan that makes use of a whole lotta manga:

The story of manga begins with 5 students picking up a textbook. After the students tear out a page of the book by mistake, the Greece mathematician Archimedes appears and proceeds to take them to various times and places, such as the Great Pyramids and palaces in Europe, where the students are met with math challenges from different types of people, including a man from the European palace a Native American and a samurai. The students are not allowed to return to their own time until they understand the solution of the math problems contained in the book.

This sorta reminds me of that Donald Duck in Mathmagic Land cartoon that I used to watch when I was a kid. I dunno, though, the plot for this math book sounds kind of lame. I can’t believe I just evaluated the “plot” of a math book…

I remember my college Japanese language textbook, Nakama, having a whole lotta manga sections. That made more sense, though, since the actual reading was part of the process of learning.

Galaxy Angel Vol. 5 – Manga Review

galaxy-angel-5-cover.jpg

Galaxy Angel 5 is the last in the Galaxy Angel manga series. Technically. There’s actually a continuation called Galaxy Angel Beta that I’ll be reviewing next. Which means that Galaxy Angel 5 doesn’t really resolve anything…

Nodame Cantabile Vol. 1 – Manga Review

nodame-1-cover.jpg

Nodame Cantabile is probably one of my top (if not the top) anime of Winter 2007. I bought the manga since I really enjoyed the anime. I finally got a chance to read it on an airplane, which I can ride, and Chiaki can’t! Ha ha.

Anime Rule #142: Band-Aids Heal Everything

band-aids.jpg

One of my favorite web comics is VG Cats, though the updates are seriously way too few and far between. I guess Scott Ramsoomair is a fan of anime, so sometimes the comics will be about anime, and not video games.

In a recent (relatively, at least) comic, Scott tackles the widely known anime rule that band-aids heal everything. Not just minor cuts and scrapes, but everything. I actually think that it’s the band-aids in conjunction with sleep that will heal everything.

When you think about it, it’s not really so far-fetched. I mean, if Usopp can survive a direct hit to the head from some blunt object (I think it was a hammer), who’s to say he can’t be healed with bandages and sleep? This phenomenon is also seen in a bunch of other shounen anime like Naruto and Bleach.

Now, if they had only applied the band-aids correctly to Haruka Suzumiya, maybe things would’ve turned out better…

Wizzywig – Anime Store Review?

wizzywig.jpg

So during my trip to the University of Michigan, I was walking around and came across an anime store called “Wizzywig.” It’s like a play on words of the pronunciation of the acronym, WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get). I had actually seen the store’s website a really long time ago, and I knew they were in Ann Arbor, Michigan, but I didn’t know they were that close to my hotel! I had to take a visit and see what the store was all about.

Lunar Legend Tsukihime Vol. 1 – Manga Review

lunar-legend-tsukihime-volume-1.jpg

Lunar Legend Tsukihime is that one game from TYPE-MOON that got turned into an anime, and later a manga. I had this manga on my Amazon.com wishlist for a while, but it never found its way into my shopping cart. There were a lot of requests to review this manga in my post about my legendary backlog, so here we go!

Happy White Day!

white-day.jpg
Technically this should be a White Day picture, since Jun is a trap.

Today is White Day! So if Valentine’s Day in Japan is the bizarro version, then White Day is like the one that we Americans celebrate. That is, in Japan, on 2/14 girls will give chocolates to guys they like (or feel socially obligated to, which is pretty much all guys they know). On 3/14, the guys who received chocolate must repay that kindness with gifts of their own. But it doesn’t have to be chocolate.

Of course, since there’s the SAD (Singles Awareness Day) that’s held on 2/14, there should be a March counterpart as well, right? Today is also Black Day for those guys who got nothing a month before. I guess I should be celebrating that…

Then again, I’d rather just skip all this crap and celebrate like a true nerd. Yes, today is Pi Day as well. I should probably be spending some time memorizing digits in pi.

And what does this have to do with anime or manga? I totally an episode of D.N.Angel where White Day is the main focus. And I think anime uses both holidays pretty well for plot development. I can’t remember any other White Days in anime, but I’m sure they’re out there.

VS. Versus Vol. 1 – Manga Review

Julie from Manga Maniac Cafe suggested that I read Versus in order to shrink my major backlog. After reading the blurb on the back of the book, I found out this is a music manga! But could it possibly be as good as Nodame Cantabile?

Stray Little Devil Vol. 1 – Manga Review

stray-little-devil-volume-1.jpg

Out of all of my recent manga acquisitions and backlog, I chose to read Stray Little Devil first. Why? Because the cover is really freaking cute! Any other reasons? Not really. I know you’re not supposed to judge books by their covers, but do manga count?
