Commercial Anime Fansubs – Just a Matter of Time?

Wannabe Fansubs Ad 02.jpgWannabe Fansubs Ad 03.jpgWannabe Fansubs Ad 04.jpg

Whilst watching the Wannabe Fansubs version of School Rumble Ni Gakki, I noticed an “ad” for the group. After the episode, a short video promoting the Wannabe Fansubs website and forums showed up. While this particular plug didn’t feel obtrusive at all to me, it did make me wonder about the possibility for fansub groups to stick other ads in their work.

Certainly the time and money it takes to release a fansub is not trivial. I believe most groups get by with generous donations from the anime-viewing community. But what if groups decided to stick ads in their releases? Would you keep watching? I don’t think I’d mind too much, especially if they were necessary for the group to remain operational.

I know it’s a touchy subject, and I’m certainly not suggesting anime fansubs actually start having ads. I think it’s an interesting topic ethics-wise, and marketing-wise. Here’s my thoughts:

Reasons that fansubs will eventually have ads:

  • Viewers really won’t mind (and can fast forward them anyway)
  • Subbers need the money to create subs (mostly to pay translators)

Reasons that fansubs will never have ads:

  • Viewers would really mind
  • Fansubs are illegal anyway; this would increase tensions between anime companies and fansub groups even more!
  • No legitimate company would advertise on an anime fansub

Like I said, this is totally a “what if” situation I’m proposing. I have a feeling that the backlash associated with a fansub group putting ads in their release would be monumental. I just wanted to know what other people thought of the idea. I’d also like to note that this is in no way an attack at Wannabe Fansubs. In fact, I really dig their work. Go to wannabefansubs.net and their forums!

Strawberry Panic might very well be the yuriest anime in existence. And I don’t even know if “yuriest” is a word! Is the yuri factor enough to make this anime the hit of the Spring 2006 season?

School Rumble Ni Gakki – Anime First Impressions

Being a huge fan of the original School Rumble anime, I was really looking forward to the second season. To gear up for it, I even bought the import manga (which I can barely read)! So does School Rumble Ni Gakki suffer from the sophomore jinx, or does it continue the awesomeness of the first season?

The most notable thing about Soul Link is that it’s based off of a game made by the same company that created Shuffle! Does this single fact make Soul Link worthy of having its own anime? Should we really be expecting Shuffle! in space?

Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu – Anime First Impressions

I wasn’t really sure what to expect from Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu (The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya) when I started watching it. What I saw was a poorly sung OP, a terribly acted anime, and lame production values. And I enjoyed every minute of it!

KIBA appears to be this Spring season’s popular shounen anime. Do the magic balls and summons put this show into the kid’s category, or does the art and plot make it something more?

Enter the Basugasubakuhatsu Naruto Blog!

Rasengan_-_Chakra_in_Hands_-.jpg

Hey all,

After reading that some in the anime community are quitting their blogs, I’ve decided to find my own true calling. Writing about Naruto! That’s right, I’m sick and tired of doing previews on stupid anime about girls in space, magical harems, horny shinigami and slice of life crap. And did I mention the magical harems!? Seriously, who cares?

Everyone knows that anime is all about ninjas. Without ninjas, anime wouldn’t even be around! Ninjas rock hard, and the hardest-rocking ninja of them all is Uzumaki Naruto! He’s sooooooooo sweet! He’s got the super air ball rasengan, and is so much stronger than Sasuke!

That’s why, from today on, I’m changing my anime blog to focus solely on Naruto! That’s right, it’s the Basugasubakuhatsu Naruto Blog! From in-depth Naruto video game reviews to the latest on Naruto cosplay, it’ll be all here!

Stay tuned as I start my 5 part series on the importance of Naruto fillers.

EDIT: Okay, I think that’s enough. If you wanna see what the Basugasubakuhatsau Naruto Blog looked like, I have a screencap here:

Anime and Manga Banned in the US!?

negima.jpg

I just found this CNN story on digg.com about the United States banning anime and manga sales! Apparently they’ve decided that ALL forms of anime and manga are pornography, not just hentai:

The Child Pornography Prevention Act of 1996 made it illegal to possess or distribute any visual depiction that “appears to be” or “conveys the impression” of a child engaging in a sexually explicit act.

The Japanese media regularly presents under-aged characters in compromising positions. Some stories are merely suggestive, while others show graphic nudity of minors.

Click here to read the whole story!

This is utterly ridiculous. I knew that Canada and Malaysia didn’t like anime, but the United States? This is the home of free speech! Just because some porn exists in anime and manga form, it doesn’t mean all of it is! They’re creating a blanket statement on all forms of anime and manga saying they’re porn! They’re even using Negima! as an example of underaged porn!

If you live in the United States, or care about free speech rights at all, I’d suggest you call your Senator or Congress person at once! I’m calling mine at 505-555-0401!

If this really happens, I might have to shut down the ol’ anime blog…

New Anime Poll: What Are You Calling The Ergo Proxy Heroine By?

school rumble.jpg

As I expected, School Rumble Ni Gakki kicks all other anime in the butt winning 30% of the vote and taking 1st place! In second place was XXXHOLiC TV with 14%, and third was Strawberry Panic! taking 9% of the vote. The competition was pretty fierce; there’s a lotta anime coming out this Spring.

That brings us to the new anime poll: What are you calling the Ergo Proxy heroine by? Her name is written in katakana as “リル・メイヤ” so this leaves her romanized name up to interpretation.

Ril, or Lil, or Lill, Or Rill, or Real, or...

A quick survey of the anime blogosphere shows that:

So what’s your say in her name? Sure, a cyberpunk chick by any other name would be as sweet, but maybe we can get around to choosing a standard name for her.

And for simplicity, can we all agree that her last name is “Meyer?” That would be great.

Spring 2006 Anime Preview Part IV

What follows is part IV of the Basugasubakuhatsu Spring 2006 Anime Preview. I think this is the last part, unless someone lets me know any anime they want me to preview. Then a part V could possibly be made.

Strawberry Panic!
Strawberry Panic!.jpg

Strawberry Panic! is about three all girl’s schools where men are totally not allowed. It’s been described sort of as a cross between Sister Princess (sister harem) and Maria-Sama ga Miteru (school yuri). Will I be watching this show? Heck yes!
