Death Note Anime To Be Available For Download (Legally)

death-note.jpg
Wanna download it?

I just got this press release from Viz stating that the Death Note anime has been licensed and that it’ll be available for download while the series is still running in Japan:

San Francisco, CA, January 10, 2007 – VIZ Media, LLC (VIZ Media), one of the entertainment industry’s most innovative and comprehensive publishing, animation and licensing companies, has announced that it has licensed from Nippon Television Network Corporation (NTV) the Download to Own (DTO) and Download to Rent (DTR) rights for the United States for the smash hit DEATH NOTE anime series, currently airing in Japan.

The deal is significant because it marks the first time a well known Japanese anime property will be made legally available to domestic audiences for download to own while the title still airs on Japanese television. VIZ Media will seek to make the series available to consumers through a number of online providers in order to reach the widest audience possible.

Like the press release says, this is significant because American audiences will be able to watch the anime before it’s even finished airing in Japan. While this is slightly cool, I have a feeling that the actual downloads will be DRM’ed to hell and only available in English dub form.

I think the ideal solution would be to offer subbed downloads on the same day of airing in Japan. Surely this wouldn’t be a problem for the company itself, as they would have access to the scripts. They would beat the fansubs (and even speedsubbers) to the punch, and I’d assume their translations would be fairly accurate. If pricing was decent (like $1 an episode?) I would totally buy it.

Gakuen Utopia Manabi Straight! – Anime First Impressions

Gakuen Utopia Manabi Straight! was one of the top anime that I wanted to watch this season. These characters are soooo freakin’ cute! This anime is based on a manga that’s being serialized in Dengeki Daioh. The very same one that brought us Azumanga Daioh and Yotsuba&! (but not the same mangaka).

Kyoshiro to Towa no Sora – Anime First Impressions

Kyoshiro to Towa no Sora sounds like a fairly promising anime. It features cute girls, hot guys (not my personal opinion…), an ultimate student council, fanservice, vampires, yuri, mecha, catgirls, awesome horses… Pretty much everything. Too bad I didn’t catch everything because I was watching this anime raw…

A Kiss For My Prince Vol. 1 – Manga Review

a-kiss-for-my-prince.jpg

A Kiss For My Prince is a manga (or man-hwa?) that I’d typically not review. It’s shoujo (which technically, I’m not against…) and it’s also Korean, not Japanese. But hey, I got it from Infinity Studios so I figured I’d give it a quick spin…

Saint October is “that one anime with the gothlolis and amnesiacs” that I thought I wouldn’t watch. Well, fast forward today and I watched it. It was the best anime I’ve seen so far this year. It was also the first anime I’ve seen so far this year…

Happy New Year! My New Year’s Anime Resolution + A Retrospective…

eggplant.jpg

Happy New Year, everybody! I hope you all have dreams of Mt. Fuji, eggplants, and hawks! Apparently, if your first dream of the new year contains those things, you’ll have good luck… Anyway, I figured I’d check out the anime resolution I made last year, and make up a new one for 2007.

My last year’s resolution was to finish the anime that I started watching. I guess that in this case, “anime I started watching” should mean past the second or third episode, since I watch almost every first episode of anime, and there’s no way I’m gonna watch every episode ever!

Looking at the list from last year, it’s kinda sad that I still haven’t finished Bakuretsu Tenshi, Full Metal Alchemist, Futakoi Alternative, Maburaho, Mezzo DSA, Okusama wa Mahou Shoujo, ROD The TV, Tenjou Tenge, or Tsukuyomi Moon Phase. I only finished like, 4 shows on that list! I think I deleted most of them anyway… I just noticed that almost all of those shows have been licensed. Coincidence?

As for the list of this years shows that I haven’t finished, the list is long…

Karaoke Contest Entries Up: Vote Now!

karaoke-contest.jpg

The karaoke contest deadline passed, was extended, and has passed again, so now it’s time to vote on the best entries! I received quite a bit of last minute entries, so I’m glad that I extended the deadline.

I’m really happy with all of the entries that were submitted. I had to double check some of the entries to make sure they were actually karaoke, and not the original (seriously!). Thanks to everyone who entered. You’re all winners in my book!

Without further ado, here are the entries for the 1st Annual Basugasubakuhatsu Karaoke Contest (in the order that they were received):

Winter 2007 Anime Preview Part 3

Nodame Cantabile

nodame-cantabile.jpg

Nodame Cantabile is that music anime that everyone kept on saying was better than Kin-iro no Chord. It’s about the lives and romance of two musicians. One is a formally trained conductor, and the other is a play it by ear kind of pianist. It’s like the odd couple, except with music! I’m a pretty big band nerd, so I’ll be watching this for sure.

Winter 2007 Anime Preview Part 2

So apparently, the anidb list that I used for the first part of the Winter 2007 Anime Preview was overly optimistic. I guess I should’ve been wary when I saw so many shows premiering on January 1st… I’ll just use Moetron’s list for the rest of my posts.

Saint October

saint-october.jpg

An orphan, a pop idol, and a mysterious girl walk into a bar… Well, subtract the bar and you have the cast of Saint October. The plot seems to involve stopping the end of the world and solving the mysteries of an amnesiac. There’s not much to say about that, but the character designs look decent. This is a “might check out” if the season is really slow.

Winter 2007 Anime Preview Part 1

As one anime season (and year) draws to a close, another is just beginning. There’s a whole lot of anime coming out for the Winter of 2007. Here’s the first chunk of my Winter 2007 anime preview:

Gothicmade

gothicmade.jpg

At first, I thought “Gothicmade” was some kind of play on words about a Gothic Maid. Apparently, it’s about women on some planet who must receive and pass down memories to other generations. From just reading that, Gothicmade sounds sort of similar to that book I had to read in middle school, “The Giver.” Gothicmade also has mecha in it, which probably means this anime will go into my “ignore unless people say it’s awesome” pile.
